Bega Bridges Replacement Project

Project Overview

Fortec was engaged by the Bega Valley Shire Council to replace two existing timber bridges as part of the Council’s infrastructure renewal program.

The project involved the design and construction of modern concrete bridge structures capable of carrying SM1600 load ratings, ensuring improved durability, load capacity, and long-term serviceability.

Scope of Works

  • Design and construct new concrete bridges for SM1600 loading requirements.
  • Design and construct temporary pedestrian & equipment crossing across Dignam’s Creek.
  • Demolition of existing timber bridges.
  • Construction of foundations incorporating bored piles, driven piles, and rock anchors.
  • Construction of in-situ concrete abutments and wingwalls.
  • Fabrication and installation of precast headstocks.
  • Fabrication and installation of post-tensioned girders for Dignam’s Creek Bridge
  • Installation of prestressed girders for Ritchies Lagoon Bridge.
  • Construction of FRP concrete bridge decks.
  • Installation of guardrails and completion of approach earthworks and spray seal works.

Challenges and Outcomes

  • Remote site locations presented logistical and access constraints.
  • Limited availability of skilled resources and materials in the region.
  • Adverse weather and flood events impacting scheduling and access.
  • Challenging ground conditions requiring tailored foundation solutions.
  • Despite these challenges, Fortec successfully delivered both bridges to a high standard of quality and safety, meeting all project milestones and client expectations.
