Murrays Bridge Replacement Project

Project Overview

Fortec was engaged by Shoalhaven City Council to replace the existing timber bridge at Murrays Bridge as part of the Council’s infrastructure renewal program.

The project involved the design and construction of a new concrete bridge structure designed for SM1600 load capacity, providing enhanced durability, increased load-bearing performance, and reduced long-term maintenance requirements.

Scope of Works

  • Design and construction of a new concrete bridge to SM1600 loading standards.
  • Construction of foundations incorporating driven piles with concrete plugs.
  • Construction of in-situ concrete abutments and wingwalls.
  • Fabrication and installation of precast headstocks.
  • Fabrication and installation of post-tensioned girders.
  • Construction of FRP concrete bridge decks and approach slabs.
  • Installation of guardrails and completion of approach earthworks and asphalt surfacing.

Challenges and Outcomes

  • Remote site location presenting logistical and access constraints.
  • Limited access to other end of the bridge.
  • Limited availability of skilled labour and materials within the region.
  • Adverse weather and flood events affecting scheduling and site accessibility.
  • Challenging ground conditions requiring adaptive and innovative foundation solutions.

Despite these challenges, Fortec successfully delivered the Murrays Bridge Replacement project to a high standard of safety, quality, and performance, achieving all project milestones and exceeding client expectations.
