Storm King Dam

Project Overview

Storm King Dam originally built in 1954 is a concrete gravity dam with an ogee crest which has a catchment of approximately 94km2. Being situated approximately 8km south-east of Stanthorpe it is supplied by Quart Pot Creek.

As part of safety improvement works to the dam wall in 2012, 15No. post tension rock anchors consisting of 4 strand anchors were installed along the crest of the spillway.

During dam lift off testing in 2021 it was found that the anchors had significant deficiencies in load when compared to the original design requirement, and losses in excess of 10% had occurred during this period.

Fortec was engaged to perform new Lift-off testing to determine current anchor loads, and if the lift off tests showed they were below the design requirement, reloading of the anchors back to design %MBL was required.

This was done using shim plates to ensure the load was achieved. New lift-off tests were performed to confirm load compliance above 64%MBL.

Scope of Works

  • Development of anchor coupling and stressing system
  • Rectification of existing platform including re-certification
  • Lift off testing of active anchors
  • Re-stressing and shimming of under-loaded active anchors
  • Rectification of plate/dam wall connection

Key Points of Interest

  • It was found that the anchor cover plates were not sealing and as such significant repairs were required, including removal of existing bolts that were epoxy fixed to the dam wall, reinstatement of an epoxy edge to match the plate/ dam wall profile, installation of ferules and bolts to allow plate removal for future works, and installation of a rubber gasket on the top and side faces to reduce water/organic material ingress into the pockets.
  • Modifications to the cover plates were also required to ensure separation of the anchor zones to the elements of the dam.
